Inseminación de los Pandas Gigantes en el Zoo Aquarium Madrid - Insemination of the Giant Pandas at the Madrid Aquarium Zoo

Durante esta pasada primavera, la panda gigante Hua Zui Ba entró en celo por primera vez en su vida.

Desde que la pareja de Pandas Gigantes, Bing Xingy Hua Zui Ba, llegarón al Zoo Aquarium de Madrid el 8 Septiembre de 2009 procedentes de la Base de Cría de Panda Gigante de Chengdu (Sichuan, China), la reproducción de esta pareja ha sido prioritaria para el personal del Zoo de Madrid y para los especialistas chinos del prestigioso Centro de Cría de Chengdú. La adaptación de ambos animales al Zoológico ha sido perfecta y hasta la actualidad no han sufrido ningún problema digno de mención dados los cuidados recibidos. Sin embargo y debido a su edad, no ha sido hasta Marzo de este año cuando Hua Zui Ba comenzó a mostrar síntomas de celo.

A principios del mes de Mayo se observan cambios en el comportamiento de Hua Zui Ba más marcados (asociados al celo), como son aumento del numero de marcajes y vocalizaciones asociadas a celo, posturas con la cola levantado y, por primera vez desde que llego a Madrid , se le observa bañarse.

Se realizaron dos inseminaciones una el 13 de Mayo del 2009 y la segunda el 14 de Mayo. Ambas Inseminaciones fueron llevadas a cabo por personal técnico del Zoo de Madrid, de la Base de Cría de Panda Gigante de Chengdu junto con el Grupo de Ecología y Biología Reproductiva de Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (CSIC). Previa a la inseminación de la hembra, se anestesió al macho para proceder a la extracción de semen mediante electroestimulación.

Desde entonces, se está estudiando de manera exhaustiva el comportamiento de la hembra y las hormonas de gestación (progesterona), así extremando los cuidados proporcionados a la hembra en previsión su posible gestación.

Debido a la fisiología reproductiva de los Pandas Gigantes, se hace muy difícil el diagnóstico de la gestación. Son mamíferos con gestación con implantación retardada del feto, lo que nos da un periodo de gestación muy variable de 79 días a 325 días, y hace que los perfiles hormonales y comportamentales de la hembra durante la gestación sean muy variables y no fiables en la mayoría de los casos.

Por todo esto, los esfuerzos del personal del Zoo de Madrid están enfocados en mantener una vigilancia constante sobre Hua Zui Ba ante su “posible” gestación y estar preparados para un próximo parto en el caso de que este se produjera.

El Zoo Aquarium de Madrid ya conoce el éxito de este tipo de intervenciones. En el 1984, fruto de una inseminación similar nació Chu Lin (la primera inseminación exitosa fuera de China) y precisamente este año, ha nacido en el zoológico madrileño el tercer rinoceronte del mundo gestado tras una inseminación.

This past spring, the Giant Panda Hua Zui Ba came on heat for the first time in its life.

Since the arrival of the pair of giant pandas at Madrid Zoo in September 2009, Bing Xingy Hua Zui Ba, from the Base of the Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu (Sichuan, China), the reproduction of this couple has been a priority for staff at the Madrid Zoo as well as the team of specialists from the prestigious Chinese breeding center in Chengdu. The adaptation of both animals to the zoo and has been seamless with no problems in the care they are receiving.

Early in the month of May changes were observed in the behaviour of Hua Zui Ba (associated with the heat), posture with the tail lifted and, for the first time since his arrival in Madrid, he was seen swimming.

Two inseminations were performed, one on May 13 2009 and the second on May 14. After the insemination of the female, the male was anesthetized for the extraction of sperm by electrostimulation.

Since then, there has been an exhaustive study of the behaviour of the female hormones and pregnancy (progesterone), and extreme care is being given for the female forecast possible pregnancy.

Due to the reproductive physiology of the giant pandas, it is very difficult to diagnose pregnancy. These are mammals with a very variable gestation period of 79 days to 325 days, and the hormonal and behavioral profiles of females during pregnancy are highly variable and unreliable in most of cases.

Therefore, the efforts of staff in the Madrid Zoo are focused on maintaining a constant vigilance of Hua Zui Ba 's possible pregnancy and childbirth

Zoo Aquarium de Madrid is already familiar with successful interventions. In 1984, as a result of a similar insemination Chu Lin was born (the first successful insemination outside China).

Kids Fun Ideas Fair - Feria Kids Fun Ideas - Talleres y Actividades en inglés

La feria de niños que se celebró el 24 de Mayo dando mucha ideas de cómo hacer disfrutar a los pequeños el inglés al máximo fué un verdadero éxito. 41 exhibidores tomaron parte en la primera feria dirigida a todos los niños que quieren aprender Inglés como su segunda lengua.
Las puertas se abieron a las 10 de la mañana y para las 11 de la mañana todo el local se llenó con familias andando con sus hijos felizmente recorriendo la feria y tomando parte en multitud de actividades empezando por divertidos talleres ingleses a representar juegos de gimnasia.

Los niños participaron con entusiasmo en una variedad de creativos y divertidos talleres también fueron entretenidos por Magos, Piratas, Brujas y Princesas.
Una rifa gratis se llevó a cabo de vez en cuando durante todo el día de regalos estupendos los cuales los fueron donados por los exhibitores bondadosamente. Los premios incluian libros, CDs, talleres gratis, ropa de niños, un Kangaroo gigante, entradas para ver "El Carnaval de los animales"
concierto, paquetes bilingues, una fiesta de cumpleaños, vouchers para libros,vouchers con descuento , muñecas hechas a mano, cesta llenas de cosas buenas donados por los exihibitores de comidas y mucho más.

Marilin Lañez, la ya muy conocida presentadora de Vaugham "Magic Hour" fué la anfitriona de la feria todo el día introduciendo los espectáculos y anunciando los ganadores de de la rifa y los premios. Los ganadores que no estubieron presentes en el momento se les notificará de su premio via email.

The Kids Fun Ideas fair took place on Sunday 24th of May and by and large it was an enormous success. 41 exhibitors took part in the first fair aimed at children who want to learn English as a second language.

The doors opened at 10.00 and by 11.00am the rooms were buzzing with families walking around with their children, taking part in a multitude of activities - ranging from fun English workshops to performing gymnastics. Not only did the children get to participate in a variety of creative and amusing workshops they were also entertained by Magicians, Pirates, Witches and Princesses.

A free raffle took place several times throughout the day with great prizes kindly donated by the exhibitors. Prizes included books, CDs, free workshops, children's clothes, a giant Kangaroo, tickets to see "El Carnaval de los animales" concert, bilingualism packs, a birthday party, book vouchers, discount vouchers, hand made dolls, hampers full of goods from the food stalls, and much more.

Marilin Lañes, the well-known Vaughan "Magic Hour" radio presenter hosted the fair throughout the day introducing the different shows and announcing the lucky raffle prize winners. Winners who were not present at the time will be notified of their prize by email.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors who took part in the fair and who put their faith in kidsinmadrid.com. After all, without the exhibitors there would have been no fair - so THANK YOU! and naturally thank you to the public for taking the time and interest to come along and find out about all the wonderful and above all fun ways to learn English right here in Madrid!

Finally I would like to offer my thanks to Vaughan Junior who supported kidsinmadrid.com with radio ads in the follow-up to the Fair as well as In-Madrid for publishing a piece on the Fair in their May issue as well as all the associations and playgroups who made sure to inform their members of the event and last but not least the hotel for all the help and support in putting the fair together. I would recommend the Hotel Tryp to anyone who is looking for a good and friendly venue to organise an event. Without all of you the fair would not have been such a phenomenal success.

¿Quieres practicar inglés en casa?

Este verano, 25 monitores “Camp Counsellors” de Canadá vendrán a Madrid para participar en los programas de Vaughan Systems. Ofrecemos la oportunidad de darles la bienvenida a la cultura española recibiéndolos en sus casas al mismo tiempo que disfrutan de la posibilidad de mejorar el inglés.

¿Quiénes son?

Todos nuestros "Camp Counsellors" son canadienses con edades comprendidas entre 18-24 años, formación de “Camp Monitor” y experiencia con niños y jóvenes.

¿En qué fechas tiene lugar?

Llegarán en Madrid el 28 de junio y saldrán el 1 de agosto.

¿Cuánto tiempo pasarán en casa?

Los monitores asistirán a las actividades de Vaughan Systems todos los días de 9:00 a 18:00 de lunes a viernes. El resto del tiempo lo tendrán disponible para realizar actividades con la familia.

¿A quién va dirigido?

Ideal para familias con hijos pequeños o de la misma edad que nuestros monitores y que busquen una experiencia cultural y humana con extranjeros de habla inglesa. Recomendado para familias que viven en la zona A de Madrid, o con acceso fácil al centro de Madrid en transporte público.

This summer, 25 Canadian Camp counsellors will be coming to Madrid exclusively to participate in Vaughan Systems Linea Junior programs. We offer families the opportunity to welcome them into the Spanish culture by offering their homes. It is an opportunity to exchange cultures and possibly improve your English!

Who are they?

All of our camp counsellors are Canadian, between the ages 18 and 24, who are certified counsellors and have experience with children and teenagers.

What dates will they be in Madrid?

They arrive, in Madrid, on June 28th and leave August 1st.

How much time will they spend at your home?

The counsellors will take part in Linea Junior programs from Monday – Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm. They will be available and are encouraged the rest of the time to participate in family activities.

Who is this offer directed towards?

This is ideal for families with small children, teenagers or young adults, who are looking for a cultural and humanistic experience with English speaking foreigners. Its recommended for families living in Zone A of Madrid, or with easy access to public transportation.

Workshop for parents on raising bilingual children - Taller sobre criar a niños en el bilinguismo

WORKSHOPS ON RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN
SINEWS Multilingual Therapy Institute organizes workshops for parents of bilingual families.
At SINEWS we are aware of the benefits that a bilingual education can offer, but also the complexity of it.

Many of the members of our team have been brought up in two languages and we know, first hand, of its advantages.

Being brought up in two languages is an adventure in which doubts may arise and small conflicts and frustrations may appear if we don’t adjust our expectations.

This workshop offers answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by parents who find themselves faced with such a project:

Can it have a negative effect my child’s intellectual development? Will speaking to a child in two languages from the start delay language acquisition? Is the best model “one parent, one language” or “one home, one language”? Is it bad for a child to mix the two languages or insert words from one language when speaking another? What to do if the child refuses to speak to the mother or father in his or her language (which the child previously used without any problem)? How to reinforce the use of one language when the other is consistently becoming more dominant?

TALLER SOBRE CRIAR A NIÑOS EN EL BILINGUISMO

SINEWS Instituto de Terapia Multilingüe organiza talleres para padres de familias bilingües.
En SINEWS somos conscientes de los beneficios que puede ofrecer educar a los niños en varios idiomas, pero también de sus complicaciones.

Muchos de los miembros de nuestro equipo hemos crecido en dos lenguas y conocemos las ventajas que esto aporta.

Se trata de una aventura durante la que surgen dudas y pueden aparecer pequeños conflictos o frustraciones si no ajustamos bien las expectativas.

El taller ofrece respuesta a algunas de las preguntas que con frecuencia nos han planteado los padres que emprenden este proyecto:

¿Puede ser malo para el desarrollo intelectual del niño? ¿Retrasa la adquisición del lenguaje hablarle desde el principio en dos lenguas? ¿Es mejor el modelo "un padre un idioma" o el modelo "un hogar un idioma"? ¿Es malo que el niño mezcle las dos lenguas o inserte palabras de una cuando habla en la otra? ¿Qué hacer cuando el niño se niega a hablar con papá o mamá en su idioma (que antes utilizaba sin problemas)? ¿Cómo reforzar el uso de una lengua cuando la otra domina cada vez más?

Kidsinmadrid.com in collaboration with PEKIDS, the bookshop and workshop centre for children in Sanchinarro, have had a difficult time deciding on the winning entries.

First of all I would like to thank all the children who have participated in this competition and congratulate them on their wonderful drawings. The variety and creativity received has been surprising and delightful. From Spiderman Eggs to traditional beautifully coloured in eggs, the decision has not been easy.

Nevertheless a decision had to be made but I would like to stress that all the entries in my opinion are winners and their pictures will remain up on the website during April for all to see.

HIJOS BILINGÜES: ¿CUÁNDO, CÓMO Y DÓNDE?

En este mundo globalizado y donde la comunicación abre cada día nuevas rutas en las que se la información fluye a velocidad de vértigo, no hace falta explicar las ventajas que ser bilingüe implica para la vida…

Éste del bilingüismo es un tema en el que han proliferado mucho los mitos: que si aumenta o disminuye la inteligencia, que si produce tartamudez, que si retrasa el desarrollo del lenguaje… También han crecido como setas las recetas para el bilingüismo: OHOL (one home, one language) sólo en parejas de habla nativa de la lengua minoritaria en una comunidad que no la usa, OPOL (One person, one language) en los casos en que ambos padres tienen lenguas maternas distintas…

Lo cierto es que ni muchas de las supuestas ventajas lo son (no se han demostrado efectos en la inteligencia global), ni muchos de los fantasmas que planean sobre el tema arrastran cadenas (no parece que haya evidencia científica de que el bilingüismo dé lugar a un aumento de los casos de tartamudez, ni retrase de manera patológica el desarrollo del lenguaje). Tampoco hay soluciones que valgan para todos en este campo. Las familias que han conseguido criar a sus hijos en dos idiomas lo han hecho de formas tan diversas que sólo cabe pensar que no existe un único modelo útil.

¿Qué deberían saber los padres que se plantean crear una familia bilingüe?

Lo primero y más importante es que el bilingüismo NO es una cuestión de TODO O NADA. Muchos lingüistas considerarían bilingüe a un niño que comprende a la perfección el idioma que le habla su padre o su madre y sin embargo lo habla sólo a un nivel muy básico. La oportunidad que ha supuesto para él estar expuesto a los sonidos de la lengua le permitirá hablarla sin acento, el conocimiento pasivo le ofrecerá capacidades potenciales que una vez expuesto a la necesidad de usarla permitirán que llegue a dominar el idioma de un modo que alguien que no ha gozado de este privilegio no podría ni soñar.
Nuestra obligación como padres no consiste en que nuestro hijo termine siendo bilingüe y con qué grado de equilibrio y dominio de cada lengua; nuestra obligación es “solamente” ofrecerle oportunidades de aprenderlas. El éxito dependerá de variables que no podemos controlar; relacionadas con las aptitudes lingüísticas de nuestro hijo, con su motivación, con las dificultades reales de exposición al idioma…

¿Cómo “diseñar” un buen sistema de comunicación dentro de la familia?

Las decisiones de quién habla qué lengua son muy importantes para el buen desarrollo del proyecto.
Es fundamental ser realistas y tomarlas en función de dos tipos de criterios:
-prácticos (cuánto tiempo pasa cada padre con el niño, si entienden ambos padres las dos lenguas, en qué país se va a vivir, por cuánto tiempo, qué posibilidades hay de escolarizar al niño en alguno de los idiomas que queremos que desarrolle…)
-emocionales (en qué idioma se comunica la pareja entre sí y si serían capaces de cambiarlo, en qué idioma nos encontramos más cómodos para cantar, reñir, consolar… a nuestro hijo)

Algunos de los aspectos que habrá que decidir son:

-Idioma que habla cada padre al niño dentro de casa
-Idioma que hablan ambos padres entre sí
-Idioma que hablan los padres al niño en presencia de terceros (cuando hay visitas)
El sistema debe ser coherente y consistente porque de ello depende la facilidad con la que el niño “separará” (diferenciará) ambas lenguas.

¿Cómo es un hogar bilingüe standard en España y qué dificultades plantea?

Muchas de las familias en España que intentan este objetivo, lo hacen por una poderosa razón: son matrimonios mixtos, en los que existen dos orígenes culturales distintos y dos idiomas distintos (un/-a español/-a emparejado con alguien de otro país).

En este caso, a la hora de diseñar el sistema de comunicación habrá que tener en cuenta dos aspectos fundamentales:

-Cuál es el idioma minoritario y qué facilidad/dificultad para exponer al niño a esta lengua vamos a encontrar en España. No es lo mismo que se trate del inglés o del flamenco.
-Qué grado de dominio del 2º idioma tiene el miembro español de la pareja. Las cosas, en general, serán más fáciles cuanto mayor sea (aunque ha habido personas que lo han conseguido de todas formas).
Lo que sí que está claro en estos casos es que es recomendable la exposición precoz y simultánea a ambos idiomas: hablarle al bebé desde su nacimiento en las dos lenguas.

Tenemos infinitas posibilidades, pero las podemos resumir en dos modelos:

OPOL (one parent, one language):

El padre español le habla en español y el padre extranjero le habla en su idioma.
Especialmente útil si el padre que habla el idioma no comunitario va a pasar mucho tiempo con el bebé o con el niño, porque trabaja en casa o porque tiene el mejor horario…

Ésta también puede ser la mejor opción, si el padre español no tiene un buen nivel de la lengua nativa de su pareja.
En este modelo, el niño puede estar expuesto o no al diálogo entre sus padres en el idioma minoritario (lo más frecuente es que las parejas que han escogido este sistema hablen entre ellos español, pero no en todos los casos es así), pero lo cierto es que siempre tendrá una menor exposición al idioma no comunitario que si en casa todos lo hablasen. Por este motivo, será muy importante (sobre todo a partir de la escolarización) buscarle otros entornos en los que practicarlo. De otro modo, es muy habitual que el niño desarrolle un lenguaje activo más débil que su repertorio pasivo o que incluso en algún momento se niegue temporalmente a hablarlo.

OHOL (one home, one language):

Para reforzar el idioma minoritario, ambos padres lo usan dentro de casa para dirigirse al niño y para hablar entre sí.
La preocupación aquí suele ser “¿qué ocurrirá cuando el niño se escolarice en un idioma que no usamos en casa?”. Se trata de una preocupación comprensible pero que se disuelve enseguida por sí misma. La escolarización es un estímulo lingüístico tan potente que a la edad en que se suele iniciar (3 años) la inmersión da lugar a un desarrollo vertiginoso de la lengua.
Esta opción puede ser especialmente útil si la lengua no comunitaria es infrecuente en el país y las posibilidades de reforzar su desarrollo a través de la escolarización, actividades extraescolares, material didáctico y de juego… es muy reducida.

¿Algunos consejos útiles para padres que educan a sus hijos en dos idiomas?

Es difícil dar consejos generales, que no estén diseñados para las particularidades de cada familia, pero hay algunas temáticas comunes que pueden resultar útiles:

• Asociación entre idioma y emoción:

En este sentido hay algunos consejos prácticos que refuerzan la idea de que si asociamos un aprendizaje a emociones negativas, éste quedará irremediablemente dañado. Así que, en general:

-No cambiar de idioma para reñir
-Cuidado con las correcciones en las que el niño se vea interrumpido, avergonzado, reñido de modo desproporcionado… Es preferible utilizar la reformulación (repetir en una frase en la que le aclaramos al niño que le hemos comprendido, la palabra o construcción que acaba de utilizar de forma incorrecta) o la ejemplificación (introducimos en ese momento o más adelante en la conversación un ejemplo distinto en el que se use correctamente la expresión).
-Cuantas más actividades que el niño disfruta se hagan en un idioma, más asociaciones emocionales positivas establecerá.
-Proteger al niño de las demandas de que muestre sus habilidades hablando en un idioma. Estas situaciones no implican necesidad comunicativa y exponen al niño a valoraciones exhibicionistas que pueden causarle timidez o miedo.
-No forzar a los hermanos a hablar entre sí uno u otro idioma. La comunicación entre ellos no debe estar constreñida por factores ajenos.

• Modos de reforzar el idioma más débil: adaptados a la edad

-En general los libros bilingües tanto en la edad prelectora como después son una herramienta muy útil. Es recomendable que el papá lea el cuento en un idioma y la mamá (u otra persona de la familia) en el otro de modo que el niño asocie las imágenes y la historia con el vocabulario y la gramática de ambos.
-Los juegos pueden ser muy estimulantes a partir de cierta edad (¡además de una oportunidad de pasar un rato divertido en familia!). Algunos juegos requieren más comunicación y son más útiles para nuestro propósito: el veo-veo, en busca del tesoro (escribir pistas en papelitos que se encadenan entre sí para encontrar el tesoro), el ahorcado, el Scrabble, el quién es quién…
-Desarrollar la relación de los padres con la comunidad de origen es importante porque otros matrimonios con hijos pueden ofrecer una oportunidad única de compartir experiencias y de hacer cosas juntos en el idioma minoritario.
-Cuantos más entornos del niño se desarrollen en el idioma que queremos reforzar, más oportunidad de desarrollo: actividades extraescolares, grupos de juego, escolarización…
-La relación con la familia de origen que vive fuera (abuelos, primos…) es la ocasión más natural de mejorar la lengua. Las vacaciones y visitas de familiares pueden ser muy útiles cuando se ha observado un retroceso en el dominio del idioma.

• Las dificultades del lenguaje no tienen por qué deberse al bilingüismo. Si aparece alguna anomalía, consultar.

Hay muy pocos profesionales del ámbito de la logopedia y de la psicología que tengan conocimientos sobre bilingüismo. Corremos por esto dos riesgos fundamentales:
-Que atribuyan el problema al bilingüismo y no tenga nada que ver
-Que no pasen por alto la influencia del bilingüismo en el desarrollo del lenguaje a distintas edades y den por patológicas características normales del desarrollo bilingüe
Ante las dudas que puedan surgir con respecto a las dificultades de nuestros hijos en el área del lenguaje, siempre será mejor consultar. Si no es nada, nuestro logopeda nos lo explicará y nos quedaremos tranquilos, tal vez se trate de una “fase” y sólo haga falta esperar o necesitemos un pequeño empujoncito a tiempo para facilitar las cosas a nuestro hijo.

BILINGUAL CHILDREN: ¿WHEN, HOW AND WHERE?

In this globalised world that we live in, communication opens new paths every day and information travels at a deafening speed - the advantages of being bilingual are fairly evident…

Bilingualism is a subject that is surrounded by myth: it increases or decreases intelligence, it causes stutters, it delays language development … Also recipes for bilingualism have sprouted up like mushrooms: OHOL (one home, one language) where the minority language is spoken at home in a community that doesn’t use it, OPOL (One person, one language) is where both parents have different native languages.

What is certain is that bilingualism doesn’t have an impact on global intelligence, nor is there any evidence that it causes stutters, nor a delay in the language development process. There also isn’t any one method that is suitable for everyone. Families who have managed to raise their children with two languages have carried out the task in such diverse and different ways that there isn’t any one guidance model.

What should parents think about when raising a bilingual child?

The first and main point is to realise that bilingualism isn’t a question of all or nothing. Many linguists classify a child as bilingual if they understand to perfection the language that their mother or father speaks but only speaks it at a very basic level. The opportunity for a child to be exposed to the sounds of a language will enable him to speak the language without an accent; the passive knowledge will give him the ability to dominate the language in ways that others can only dream of.
Our responsibility as a parent doesn’t consist in making our child bilingual nor what level of mastering he has of each language; our responsibility is only to offer our child the opportunity to learn the languages. Success will depend on variables that we can’t control related to the linguistic aptitudes of our child, their motivation, challenges encountered in exposing our child to the language…

How to design a good system of communication within the family?

The decision as to who speaks what language is very important towards achieving success.
It’s necessary to be realistic and take your decisions based on two types of criteria:
-practical (how much time does each parent spend with their child, do both parents understand both languages, in what country are you going to live, for how long, what chances are there of educating your child in a school of one of the two language?
-emotional (in what language does the couple communicate and would they be able to change it, in what language are you comfortable singing in, consoling, disciplining…).

Some aspects which need to be decided upon are:

- Language that each parent speaks in the home
- Language that the parents speak to each other
- Language that the parents speak to their child in front of third parties such as friends

The system needs to be coherent and consistent which is key for the child’s ability to “separate” and differentiate both.

What is a typical Bilingual Spanish family and what difficulties do they face?

Many Spanish families that take on this project do it for one very powerful reason: they are mixed marriages, from different cultures and languages.
In this case, when designing the system of communication, two fundamental aspects need to be taken into account:
-Which is the minority language and what difficulties are we going to encounter when exposing our child to this minority language in Spain.
-How well does the Spanish parent dominate the other language?
What is clear in both cases is that it’s recommendable to expose your child as early on as possible to both languages: talk to your baby from birth in both languages.

There are a multitude of possibilities which can be summed up in two models:

OPOL (one parent, one language):

The Spanish parent talks in Spanish and the other parent talks in their native language.
Especially useful if the foreign parent is going to spend a lot of time with the child, be it because they work from home or have a flexible working schedule …

This can also be the better option if the Spanish parent doesn’t have a good handle of their partner’s native language
In this model, the child can be exposed or not to the dialogue between his parents in the minority language (usually parents who choose this system speak Spanish to each other) but what is certain is that they will always be less exposed to the non-community language than if everyone spoke this language at home. For this reason, it’s very important (especially when they start school) to find them activities and places where they can practice the language. If not, it’s likely that the child will develop an active language which is weaker than his passive repertoire and he may even refuse to speak the language temporarily.

OHOL (one home, one language):

To increase the minority language both parents should use it at home to talk to each other and to their child.
The concern here usually seems to be what will happen when the child goes to school in a language that we don’t use at home? It’s an understandable concern which disappears and resolves itself soon after. Schooling provides such a strong linguistic stimulus that at the age in which children normally start (3 years old) immersion leads to a rapid development of the language.
This option can be especially useful if the minority language isn’t common in the resident country and the possibility of encouraging its development through school, after-school activities, educational material, games . . . is very limited.
Some useful advice for parents who are raising their children with two languages?
It’s difficult to give advice which isn’t designed for each and every particularity of each family, but advice can be offered in some common areas:

• Association between language and emotion:

There is evidence to suggest that an association between learning and negative emotions can do irreversible damage.
Therefore, as a general guide:
-Don’t change languages when disciplining your child.
-Avoid interrupting your child to correct them (this leads to embarrassment), and try not to overreact by reprimanding them… It’s more effective to rephrase what they’ve said (use the word, saying, or grammatical construction that they’ve just used incorrectly by repeating the sentence correctly showing that we’ve understood what they have said,) or use examples (use the expression or word correctly later in the course of a conversation).
-The more activities that the child enjoys in the said language, the more positive emotions will be established and associated with that language.
-Protect children from demands to show off their language skills. These situations have no communication value and unnecessarily put the child on the spot and under pressure which can lead to shyness and fear.
-Don’t force siblings to speak to each other in one or the other language. Communication between them shouldn’t be limited by outside factors
Ways to encourage and strengthen the weaker language (adapt to age of child):
-In general, reading books in the two languages, both in the pre and post reading age, are a very useful tool. It’s preferable that the Dad reads books in one language and the Mother, or other member of the family, reads in the other language so that the child associates the images and story with vocabulary and grammar in both languages.
- Games can be very stimulating from a certain age (as well as being a nice way to have some fun as a family). Some games require more communication and are more useful for language learning: I spy, Treasure Hunt (write clues on pieces of paper – each clue leads to the next, finally leading to the hidden treasure), Hangman, Scrabble, Charades…
-Parents developing a relationship with the community where the minority language is spoken is important because other couples with children can offer a great and unique opportunity for sharing experiences and for doing things together in that language.
-The more you expose the child to the language that you want them to develop the better: after-school activities, playgroups, schooling…
- Nurturing your child’s relationship with the extended family (grandparents, cousins…) is the perfect opportunity to improve the language. Holidays and visits can be useful when the language learning process has slowed down or gone into retreat.
Difficulties experienced in language acquisition or usage may not be due to bilingualism. If there is any abnormality, consult with a specialist.

There are very few speech therapists or psychologists that specialise in bilingualism.

This creates two important risks:

-The belief that a real speech impairment is attributable to bilingualism
-Forgetting to take into consideration that bilingualism can influence language development at certain stages, and assuming that there is some type of impairment when it’s really just a normal part of the process of becoming bilingual.
It’s always best to consult with a specialist if you have any doubts with respect to difficulties that your child may have with language acquisition. If there’s nothing to worry about, the speech therapist will be able to determine this and give you peace of mind. Perhaps it’s just a phase and you only need to wait it out or give a little push to help your child along.

I love chocolate, I LOVE CHOCOLATE! and today I want to share with you a to die for secret recipe for the best darn chocolate cheesecake that I have ever tried and it is really very easy to make and you can get the ingredients here in Madrid without any difficulty.

I got this recipe from a Diner Desserts cookbook which I bought some years ago from Harvey Nichols in London. At the time I bought the book just because I thought it would look good on my kitchen shelf. It stayed on my shelf gathering dust for a few years until one day out I took it down off the shelf, blew away the dust and decided to give one of the recipes a shot.

I never looked backed and if you try this at home, neither will you. Please do leave me your comments if you try it out.

This is a dense, chewy brownie layer topped with a creamy cheese mixture and lots of pecan halves (walnuts will do). The subtle tang of the cheese cuts the richness of the chocolate and the pecans add a nutty crunch.

You will need:
CHOCOLATE LAYER:
6 ounces (175 gr) of semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
3 ounces (85 gr) unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 cup (240ml) of all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 cup (240gr) of unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cup (360gr) of granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

CHEESECAKE LAYER:
1 pound (450gr) of cream cheese (Philadelphia) softened
1/3 cup (80gr) granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tablespoon of heavy cream
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

GARNISH
Pecans or walnuts (around 1/2 a cup)

1. Preheat the oven to 150ºC or 300ºF. Line a 9 inch by 13 inch baking pan with foil, so that the foil extends 2 inches beyond the two short ends of the pan. Lightly butter the bottom and sides of the foil-lined pan.
2. To make the chocolate layer, place the semi sweet and unsweetened chocolate in the tope of a double boiler over barely simmering water. Heat, stirring occasionally until the chocolate melts. Let cool for around 10 mins, or until tepid.
3. In a small bowl, stir together the flour and salt with a whisk
4. In an electric mixer, using the paddle attachment or beaters, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed for about 1 minute, or until combined. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition and scraping down the sides of teh bowl as necessary. Beat in the melted chocolate and vanilla. On low speed, beat in the flour mixutre until blended. Scrape into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Place the pan on a flat surface in the freezer for 15 minutes.
5. To make the cheesecake layer, in an electric mixer, using the paddle attachment or beaters, beat together the cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Beat in the egg, cream, and vanilla until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat for another 30 seconds. Scrape the cheese mixture over the chilled chocolate layer and spread into an even layer. Sprinkle the pecans over the cheese layer.
6. Bake the bars for 70 to 75 mins or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out with a few moist crumbs clinging to it. Do NOT over-bake. Place the pan on a wire rack and cool completely. Using the two ends of the foil as handles, lift the brownies out of the pan. Invert onto a cutting surface and peel off the foil. Reinvert and cut into 3 inch squares. Serve at room temperature. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.

En Esta Clase, Todos Escuchan

Arrodillados y con los ojos vendados, los niños abren sus bocas y esperan ansiosamente. Las patatas con sabor a vinagre provocan gruñidos de desaprobación. La miel y el chocolate se reciben con susurros favorables.
“¡Salado!” grita Mauro, un niño de cinco años, al morder una galleta.
“Yes! Salty!” dice en ingles la profesora Jill Stribling. Momentos antes, dirigió a los niños en una canción de baile y movimiento.
El taller parece ser una lección imaginativa sobre los cinco sentidos, parte de un panorama de carteles que prometen “inglés ahora” y academias de lenguas en cada esquina de un país donde cada vez más se valora el bilingüismo.
Pero si madres como Myriam Tena asienten con la cabeza, es por mucho mas que los cinco sentidos en inglés. La hija de Tena, Nerea, nació con perdida auditiva.

Hace una década en España, una niña como Nerea, de cuatro años y con perdida auditiva en ambos oídos, podría haber sido relegada a un colegio para niños sordos, o hipoacúsico, y limitada a un idioma – la lengua de signos. Pero la mas amplia disponibilidad de implantes cocleares y audífonos digitales con sistemas FM para reducir el ruido ponen a Nerea directamente en el siglo XXI.
Para acentuar el punto, Dale Sindell, quien apoya a las personas que tienen perdida auditiva a través de su sitio de Web, www.t-oigo.com, Jill Stribling, fundadora del programa de enseñanza para niños English for Fun, y Paloma Irving, de www.kidsinmadrid.com, han colaborado para lanzar un programa que reúne niños con perdida auditiva con niños normoyentes, o sin problemas de audición.
“Es para mostrarle al mundo que los niños sordos aprenden tal como cualquier niño o niña,” dice Irving.
La clase del viernes pasado en Mathnasium, un centro de aprendizaje en Avenida Bruselas, fue la segunda de varios talleres de integración que han planeado las tres.
“La gente ve a un niño con gafas y saben que el tiene las mismas oportunidades que cualquier niño,” dijo Sindell. “Pero ven a un niño con audífonos y no saben lo que es.”
Sindell, que lleva audífonos, es profundamente sorda. Pero nunca dejo que la sordera frenara sus proyectos de vida. Es autora de dos libros, ha trabajado como cazatalentos para una empresa española, y ascendió al puesto de Directora de Marketing en Citigroup. Cuando resultó que el mas pequeño de sus tres hijos también tenía perdida auditiva, empezó a abogar para las personas sordas en España y se dedicó a llenar un vació informativo que existe en el país.
En España hay un millón de personas con distintos grados de sordera, según la Confederación Estatal de Personas Sordas. De estas, 7,000 son niños menores de seis anos. Unas 6,000 personas llevan implantes cocleares, según la Asociación de Implantados Cocleares de España.

Los gastos pueden ser prohibitivos. Un implante coclear cuesta alrededor de 30,000 euros, según Dale Sindell. La Seguridad Social cubre los gastos de la operación, pero no de la logopedia que se requiere después para que un niño implantado desarrolle el idioma oral.
A pesar de los avances médicos y sociales para los hipoacúsicos, sigue la ignorancia.
“Todavía hay mucho desconocimiento,” dice Fernanda Hinojosa, una logopeda que asistió a la clase del viernes. “En España, la gente ve a un niño con perdida auditiva y lo primero que hacen es asociarlo con la lengua de signos.”
Myriam Tena decidió enfrentarse directamente a las nociones falsas. Registro a Nerea en un colegio público. Les han recibido bien, y la administración esta colaborando con la madre sobre las necesidades escolares de la pequeña.
Aun con estos logros, Tena recuerda que el choque inicial de la diagnosis de Nerea fue difícil de soportar. Nerea tenia cuatro meces.
“Cuando ladraba nuestro Pastor Belga, mi esposo y yo saltábamos, pero Nerea no reaccionaba. Sabíamos que algo no estaba bien.”
Llegaron los resultados de los análisis de audición.
“Fue devastador,” dice Tena. “Cuando estas embarazada, te planteas toda una travesía con tu hijo. De repente aterrizas en otro lugar. Lo vimos todo negro.”
Después de trabajar con logopedas, conocer a otros padres de hipoacúsicos y aprender lo que es la sordera en el siglo XXI, Tena venció sus temores. Hoy en día, Nerea lleva un audífono en el oído derecho y un implante coclear en el izquierdo. Tena, que también ha participado en talleres para padres como ella en la clínica norteamericana John Tracy de Los Angeles, sabe que su hija tendrá una vida normal. Eso incluye hablar por lo menos dos idiomas y competir de adulta en el mercado global.
Cuando terminó la clase del viernes, Nerea jugo y pinto junto a Daniela, una niña normoyente. En un momento agarró un micrófono plástico para hablar, pero dejó su discurso para otro día.
“Las cosas han cambiado dramáticamente. Ella puede comunicarse como cualquier otro niño,” dice Tena mientras sonríe a su hija. “Nuestra visión es positiva.”

Wearing blindfolds, the children kneel expectantly and open their mouths. Salt-and-vinegar chips provoke surprised grunts. Honey and chocolate get favorable cooing.
“Salado!” yells 5-yr-old Mauro as he bites into a cracker.
“Yes! Salty!,” says English teacher Jill Stribling, who moments before led the children t through a song routine as they followed the lyrics’ commands to move in a circle.
To the outsider, it is an imaginative lesson on the senses as approving parents look on, part of the backdrop of learn-English-now ads and language centers in a country that has recently placed a premium on bilingualism. .
But far more than the five senses in English has mothers like Myriam Tena nodding in approval: her daughter, Nerea, is one of several children in the class who were born deaf.
A decade ago in Spain, four-year-old Nerea, who has severe hearing loss in both ears, might have been relegated to a school for the deaf and confined to sign language. But the wider availability of cochlear implants, digital hearing aids and noise-reducing FM systems puts Nerea squarely in the 21st century. Her parents expect her to have the same opportunities as any of the hearing children in the class.
To drive the point home, Dale Sindell, who provides information and support for the hard-of-hearing through her website, t-oigo.com; Jill Stribling, founder of English for Fun and Paloma Irving, of kidsinmadrid.com are collaborating on a pilot program for children that brings together the hearing and the deaf to learn English.
“It’s to show the world that deaf children can learn just like the boy or girl next door,” said Irving.
Friday’s class at Mathnasium, an after-school learning center on Avenida Bruselas, was the second of several integrated workshops planned.
“People see a child with glasses and know he has the same possibilities as other children,” said Sindell. “But when they see a child with a hearing aid they don’t know what it is.”
Sindell, who is profoundly deaf, never let the condition derail her own plans. She has worked as a corporate headhunter and director of marketing for Citigroup. After the youngest of her three children was diagnosed with severe hearing loss, she began advocating for the deaf and working to fill an informational void.
In Spain, one million people have varying degrees of deafness, according to the State Confederation of Deaf People. Of those, 7,000 are children under six. Roughly 6,000 people in Spain have cochlear implants, according to the Association of People with Cochlear Implants in Spain.
Costs are prohibitive. Implants can run up to 30,000 euros, said Sindell. The public health system will pay for it, but not for the speech therapy a child will need afterwards. A first-generation, digital hearing aid can cost around 2,500 euros, though the government provides qualifying recipients with just 700 euros every four years for the devices.
Some say little is understood about deafness in Spain.
“There is a lot of ignorance out there,” said speech therapist Fernanda Hinojosa, who attended Friday’s class. “People in Spain still associate the deaf with sign language.”
Myriam Tena decided to confront the misconceptions head on. She enrolled her child in a mainstream public school and is working with the school administration on Nerea’s needs in the classroom.

But Tena says the initial shock of her child’s diagnosis was hard to bear. It came when Nerea was just four months old.
“Whenever our Belgian Sheepdog barked, my husband and I jumped, but Nerea wouldn’t react. There were also slammed doors, other loud noises. We knew something was wrong,” she said.
Then came the test results.
“It’s devastating,” Tena said. “When you’re pregnant, you imagine the journey you’ll have with your child. Then you land someplace else. Everything looked bleak.”
Working with speech therapists, meeting parents like herself and learning about deafness in the in the 21st century vanquished Tena’s fears. Today, Nerea has a hearing aid in her right ear and a cochlear implant in her left ear. Tena, who has also attended workshops for parents of deaf children at John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles, expects her child will have a normal life. That includes speaking at least two languages and competing in a global economy.
After Friday’s class, Nerea drew and played with Daniela, one of the hearing children who attended. At one point she clutched a plastic microphone, but decided to save her speech for another day.
“Things have changed dramatically for the deaf. She can communicate the way any other child can,” said Tena as she smiled at her daughter. “Our outlook is positive.”
